Over two hundred runners took to the beautiful countryside in Kingswood, just outside Wolverhampton, for the 2009 March Hair Raiser. For the first day of spring the weather was fantastic, and the race was a great success. First man past the post was Dave Evans (Wolves & Bilston), closely followed by Patrick Kavanagh (Tipton Harriers) and Ross Jones (Wolves & Bilston). Fifth across the line was also the first woman, Debbie Walters (unattached), with Sadie Shepherd (Wrekin Road Runners) and Vicky Ornsby (Wolves & Bilston) taking the second and third women’s positions.

The proposed fixtures and hosts for the 5-fixture National Young Athletes League season have now been put into the events calendar, on the right. These all take place on a Sunday in the period from May to July. We are currently in the Midlands Premier League for the second year running, so we will need to work hard to maintain that position.
This year we have the benefit (for the athletes at least!) that we are playing host to the fourth fixture, so there can be no excuses about travel being an obstacle. Other hosts this year are Stafford, Tamworth, Rugby and Cheltenham, so hopefully none of these will prove to be too far flung for you to make it on the day. Coach or minibus transport can be put in place, provided we have enough athletes to fill up all the seats on board.
So make a note in your diaries and let’s give it our best again this year!

Well done to all the young athletes who took part in the Cross Country season this winter. It’s a tough competition to take part in – 5 races over the season in challenging conditions – and it takes a lot of commitment for these young people (and their parents!) to get to each race, no matter what the weather.
Out of 20 teams in the league, Wolves & Bilston finished 12th overall, which is good going and gives the team plenty of opportunity to improve on this position next season.
It requires a great deal of stamina to take part at such as young age, and it’s very easy to drop out part way through the season or give up altogether as the young athletes get older (you can see from the age-breakdown below, that the team positions are better for the younger groups), so again WELL DONE to all those who stuck at it and gave it their best!
