Walsall Run 5k and 10k 19th September

Paul Tabor writes

The first (I believe) Walsall 5K and 10k run took place on Sunday.  The amazing news for us is that it was won by 9 year old Grace Smith, who we are very fortunate to have as one of our members!!!
She won the race in 23 mins 12 seconds, and was also 12th overall behind the leading men!!!
here is a link to the photo of the first three.

Her parents are happy for us to put this on the website.
If you need any further info let me know.

Midland Counties Road Relays Sutton Park 20th September

A great day for the club. The full results for Ladies, Mens and Masters are on http://www.race-results.co.uk/results/2014/

Here is what manager Dan Brazier told his team.

“Hi all, big thank you to everyone involved yesterday, runners, helpers, wife’s and girlfriend and families we should all be proud of what we achieved as a Team the atmosphere around our camp was great.

It was also great hearing so many of the lads saying I beat last years time, i beat the predicted target you set, I know I can run quicker next time, etc. I’ve not checked but i think at least 20 of us had course pb’s yesterday which shows we are improving.

Looking at results from yesterdays A team 4th on the day and B team being the 5th B team on the day(plus Masters lads times and the Half dozen lads missing).

National Relays next 4th Oct, I will be picking the A and B teams from the 12 quickest available times from yesterdays results at bottom so please get back to me by end of next week so i can start organising that.

Thanks again for all the hard work,”

Wrekin Streak 30th April 2014.

A report from Lucy Cambridge

Great running conditions in deepest Shropshire welcomed runners to the first of the Shropshire Summer Fell Series – The Wrekin Streak. This race does exactly what it says on the tin – flat out up and down the Wrekin on the main tourist path.

A great turn out from W&B, with a few moonlighting in their Mercia vests.

Paul Hammond continues to go from strength to strength, with a solid performance, finishing in 4th place in 19.09. Dan Maskew (19.12) and Dan Brazier (19.17) followed close behind with Jamie Ward (19.57) chasing them to finish as first Junior. Brian Wright finished in 21.10, followed by Dan Vaughan in 22.45. Duncan Davies enjoyed himself finishing in 23.36, 3rd M50.

Next to finish was the first of the W&B ladies, Lucy Cambridge in 25.58. 5th lady and 1st L40. Rae Moorhouse who had led Lucy on the uphill, was next over the line in 27.05, 7th lady, 2nd L40. Steve Allsopp finished in 28.01 followed by Trish Morgan in 30.56, 3rd L40, giving the W&B ladies a clean sweep in the L40 category.

105 finishers, 11 of them from Wolves

Plymouth Half Marathon 27th April 2014

Lucy Cambridge took on this hilly, challenging half marathon, despite swearing herself off road running some 6 years ago J

It was hard work from the off, which was a shame as it would have been nice to have enjoyed the scenery of the Hoe and Barbican. A gentle uphill pull for the first few miles made settling into a steady pace hard work. In due course, the route crossed the river and ascended to Saltram House, a National Trust property. A lovely downhill trail section through the Saltram estate bought welcome respite from the tarmac, emerging alongside the river for some decent flat, steady-paced running. Back over the river, and a turn up the opposite bank brought the runners to an out and back section. I was comforted to see the 1.30 pacer heading the other way and noted I was not as far behind him as I feared! The turn was a welcome sight, and I saw the only other vest I recognised in the form of a Tipton runner approaching the turning point, a short distance behind me. Shortly after, runners returned to the waterfront, running along cobbled streets onto the Barbican and then a cruel, pace-killing final uphill mile was almost my undoing. The final 200 metres were flat along the top of the Hoe, and with my 1.40 target being perilously close, I found enough in the tank to push it, thankfully, as if I hadn’t, my target would have been gone. I finished in 1.39.58, 3rd L40, 33rd lady overall.

It was a tough course, not flat PB material, but a lovely small half to do – no crowding, lots of space to run, pacers, very friendly and well organised.

Another good race with John Brown sorting the weather out, ensuring it did not rain until after we had finished. Wolves missed out to two very good athletes from the North East which meant that Dave Smith and Tess Clarke both had to settle for second.

Another strong run for Paul Thacker to come 5th in 38:43 and win the over 40’s prize. Harry Cresswell produced his best run yet beating many of his rivals to come 8th overall and take the youngsters prize.  The other age groups went to Rachel Coupe, Jacqui Elton Whittaker, Pauline Newton, Kathy Ling, Sian Powell, Simon Calrow and Lionel Spittle.
