Although it was a relatively quiet weekend for athletes from Wolves & Bilston, there were still some events going on, and what was going on was going on at a national level.
First of all, we had the National Cross Country Championships, It was the turn of the north area to host, and the venue chosen was at Hardwick East Park in Sedgefield, County Durham. The distance may have put a lot of people off but there were still some willing to pull on the vest and race through the mud for the club.
Nahum Worrall raced in the U15 boys’ event over 4k coming home in 211st place in 14.51, and in the Senior men’s race Gary Worrall led our duo home in 395th place in 48.57 with Derrick Milligan crossing the line in 50.33 in 472nd spot.
There was track action at the other end of the country at the British Masters Indoor Championships at Lee Valley Sports Centre. Greg Asbury had intended to compete in a number of events across the weekend, but a back spasm curtailed his ambitions leaving him with only one race on Saturday, the M50 200m, where he was 2nd in his heat placing 7th overall in a time of 26.30. He stayed on for the following days events to cheer on his club mates and was trackside to encourage a trio who competed over 1500m. Dave Norman made his indoor, and also 1500 metre, debut finishing in 6th place in 5.42.29 in the M55 category, Sabrina Thomas raced in the F35 event placing 10th as her race combined a number of age groups, but placing 4th in her own category in a time of 5.28.72. And Lucie Tait-Harris raced in the F50 category and pocketed her second indoor medal of the campaign, a bronze to go with her 3000 gold from a few weeks ago, Lucie bagged the 3rd spot, only 4 hundredths of a second off the silver medal, stopping the clock in 5.26.89.
And across the pond in the US Louise Hackett claimed victory in the Silverston Invitational Meet at the University of Michigan in a spectacular time of 4.54.66, equivalent to a 4.34 1500 metres.
