Weekly update 11th July 2026

This is going to be a bumper edition with so much going on over the last few days.

We’ll start with some significant news in the throwing world. The bulk of our members are runners but we have some excellent field eventers and throwers, after all we are an athletics club with almost 60 years of history and a great record of producing Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth athletes who hurl things great distances. It appears the next one of that production line is Ethan Kendrick who pocketed a superb silver medal at the England Athletics U20 & Senior Championships in Bedford. Ethan threw a shiny new PB of 64.91 to take the runners up spot. Huge congratulations to Ethan, and also to Matt Sutton and Steve Pearson who spend hours coaching, it’s great to see the trios hours rewarded with a fantastic result.

Also in the throwing field, and to catch up on one I think we missed, there was a gold medal for Lee Thornton in the Midland Masters Throws Pentathlon Championships at a roasting hot Oxford. Lee finished on 2747 points, over 600 clear of his nearest rival to claim the top spot on the podium.

There was some track action at Birmingham University where they hosted the Ivy League match, featuring athletes from the universities of Pennsylvania and Cornell in the US against the best of Brum. Louise Hackett placed 4th over 3000m in 10.15.25, our very own Nacardo Lewis ran the 3rd leg in a victorious Birmingham University team in the 4 x 100m relay, clocking a total time of 43.36. There was more running in circles at the BMC meeting in Loughborough where Theo Ulfig placed 4th over 1500m in 4.18.53, and there was talk of athletes running at Trafford and Watford but having trawled through the results I can’t see that anyone took up that offer.
