Weekly update 28th January 2025

It was a medal strewn weekend for athletes from Wolverhampton & Bilston AC both across the country and overseas.

Pride of place goes to Isobelle Jones, who pulled on the Great Britain vest once again in the European Cross Cup in Hannut, Belgium. It was a wonderful race for Wolves finest and the GB girls, with Isobelle taking first place in the Junior Womens race over 2640 metres in 18.55, Eliza Nicholson of Blackheath & Bromley was 2nd in 18.59 and Isla McGowan of Banbury was 3rd in 19.27, with the GB ladies filling all three steps of the podium.

On the back of Isobelle’s 5th place in the European Cross Trial at Liverpool and 36th in the European Cross Country Championships in Turkey, this was another great performance for the W&B superstar. If all goes to plan, she will be representing the club in the Midlands Cross Country League on home turf in a couple of weeks.

The club was amongst the medals again in Sheffield in the BMAF Indoor Pentathlon, 3000m Championships and Open Events meeting. Lucie Tait-Harris claimed first place in her race over 3000m, posting a time of 11.30.71 in a run from the front solo effort lapping half the field at least once, and taking victory by half a lap. In the process Lucie claimed gold medals as Midlands Masters and British Masters Champion in her age group.

Greg Asbury had a long day competing in the pentathlon,  placing 4th with a time of 12.06 in the 60m hurdles, placing 4th in the long jump with a best leap of 4.37, something he achieved twice in 3 attempts, recording a throw of 6.42 for 8th place in the shot put, a leap of 1.41 in the high jump which gave him 2nd place on count back  and in with a chance of a medal with one event remaining. Greg secured this with a win in the 1000m in a time of 3.02.80 which put him in 3rd place over five events and taking the British Masters bronze medal in the M50 category.

There was further action at the same venue twenty-four hours earlier where Samantha Agomoh placed 1st in her heat over 60m for U15s in 8.02, La-Taunya Samuels was 6th in 8.03 over 60m, Mariama Foster placed 4th in 8.92, again over 60m. Lattie then placed 6th in the 60m second round in 7.99, and also placed 4th over 200m in 26.62. Psalm Roberts-Nash placed 4th over 400m in 49.63.

Away from the indoor action there was some mud to encounter at the Midlands Counties Cross Country Championships at Mallory Park in Leicestershire, where Seb Palmer placed 6th in 9.48 and Nahum Worrall was 19th in 10.23 in the U13 boys race. James Neilson was an excellent 10th in the U20 mens race in 24.05. The senior mens team placed 7th with Gary Worrall bringing the club home in 45.04, Ben Foster was 76th in 45.48, Derrick Milligan was 90th in 46.47, Steve Newman placed 92nd in 47.09, Tom Pryor 120th in 49.24 and Andy Horton was 146th in 52.23 to make up the scoring team. Ben Pilsbury was 156th in 53.59, Rob Edwards 182nd in 58.38 and Dave Norman 198th in 1.00.44, good enough to pocket a Midlands Masters silver medal in the M50 age group.
